I have a 30 second audio file but I only want the first 20 seconds. I want the rest deleted. Is there a free program that will let me do this? Can this be done in Garageband?

umm... you're in luck .. :D

Audacity lets you do just that ... and much more. :)

Thanks; but I also found a way to do it in Garageband - only problem is that when I export to .mp3, the 10 seconds I cut out are still there, it is just silent. How do I delete the empty part in Garageband? (I will also try Audacity).

which version of garageband you using?

I have 08 so I'll comment assuming that's what you're using. Press the repeat button (to the right of the play/fd/rw buttons). Once turned on, you'll see a yellow bar appear above your track. Adjust the length of it to match the music. If it's too long, you'll get blank spots.
