is there a performance difference between MBA and MBP with an external monitor?

I am trying to decide between the MBA and MBP. I am going to be using an external monitor a lot. Is there any performance difference between them when hooking up to an external monitor? Since they have the same onboard video chipset, is it the same? Or does the CPU make a difference? (there is a slight difference there)

I'm beginning to find information that onboard video must touch the CPU, so there may be a difference, albeit small?

I went from a mid 2010 15" MBP to a new 13"/i8/256 gb MBA using a 24" ACD. No performance difference that I can see.

i was running a 2010 11 inch air on the 27 apple display. it was horrible. the little air had a real hard time. nothing was smooth. I just went out and bought the base 2011 13inch air and it runs it like a champ. night and day difference.

I don't know about the pro, but the new airs work great.
