I got a refurbished 1st gen 8g and I've upgraded to whatever software that it gave me that cost 9. 95 and has the app store and I wanna know if there is a point to jailbreaking it.

Yup.

you can customize... the whole thing, from complete themes, to backgrounds, keyboards, calculators, lockscreens etc...

And third party apps... lots of cool ones, and also you can SSH into your ipod.

Not to mention some things that we can't discuss here on macrumors, but you can check out my signature for that

There are also some nice alternatives to the Apple iPhone apps that you bought, including tons of free games made by people specially for the iPod Touch. You will have to have access to a computer with wifi to be able to put the apps on your phone, though.
