Is there a problem changing your password on OX Mountain Lion

I change my password on my Macbook Pro last Saturday night and ended up locking myself out of my Mac even though I typed in the new password correctly twice when I went to Log back into my account it's said that new password I set was incorrect. And because I had FileVault on I couldn't reset my password using command S at all I try command R but because of FileVault my hard-drive wasn't showing up. So I am wondering can you not use special characters at all in a password on a Mac?
