I've been using a Mac for a few years now and can't believe I haven't noticed this before, but I just realized some of my photos are showing the .jpeg extension, and some aren't. After looking at them some more, I discovered it has to do with the 'Hide extension' setting in Get Info. I also noticed the ones that are showing the extensions were exported from the Photos app, and the ones that aren't showing the extensions were exported from Pixelmator to my iCloud Drive.
After noticing this, I did some more looking and realized some of my PDFs were the same way. Ones I have downloaded from the web show the extension, and the others that were printed to PDF or exported to PDF do not show the extension. There are other filetypes as well, but I'll just leave these two examples. I have never touched the "Hide extension" setting anywhere before.
So this got me thinking. Is it really up to the app or the way a file is saved that determines how this setting is set? I'm struggling to see why I would want some files to show the extension, and some not for the same filetype. Personally, I would rather have a way to hide the extension based on filetype or extension, such as not showing the extension for all .jpeg files. As far as I can tell, there isn't any easy way to do this in macOS. (I'm aware of the "Show all filename extensions" setting in Finder Preferences.)
Is there use case where someone would want to see the .xyz extension for a certain set of files, but not for others of the same filetype? It seems like it could be a bit of a pain to have to manage them individually (ex. Export photos from Photos and then go into them to hide the extension; or conversely, export photos from Pixelmator and go into them to show the extension). Is there something I could be missing?
