I would like to use my personal Macbook Pro as a target display for my work iMac, but apparently that's not possible. Anyone know if there is a technical reason for this? And are there any workarounds that could provide a similar function?

The hardware of the rMBP simply wasn't designed to use this feature. However, what you want to do is still possible with some lag over Thunderbolt Bridge and Screen Sharing. A dongle to emulate a display will be needed to Extend Desktop on the rMBP through Screen Sharing, or an app similar to Air Display will do also this.

Because no port is connected to the internal display. There's just no signal path for the video information to go through.

AFAIK, there aren't any laptops on the market that do.
