Is there a tweak to activate Battery Status ONLY when Notification Center is pulled?

This would be ideal for me as I'm typically not interested in the exact battery life, but would like to see a percentage without having to navigate the Settings menus to see it.

I think you can install a widget that has very nice battery stats. then disable it in the status bar.
