Is there a way to auto-arrange icons

Is there a way to auto-arrange icons on the desktop or a folder instead of right clicking and choosing sort by type all the time?

finder > view > show view options >arrange by...

that ought to do it. in a finder window you can also click the gear icon on the toolbar and get general settings for viewing windows, choose apply as defaults.

i think that's the same as just right clicking and arrange. which didnt seem to work for em.
