Is there a way to make things larger without decreasing the resolution?

I'm trying to help out two coworkers with new iMacs. They decreased the resolution so they can see things better on their computers. Is there a way to keep the resolution high, but to make screen elements larger without manually doing it for every app?

I could have sworn there was some way to do this but can't think of it right now.

Remember resolution independence and the Quartz Debug scaling factor? Adjusting that is the only way I know of to achieve this effect, and doing this is NOT recommended because the implementation is buggy.
