Hi,

My Mac mini is connected to routher via ethernet AND wifi.

Needless to say, the ethernet is the main connection ordinarily.

Unfortunately where I live the internet can relatively often get unreliable where the connections from my devices to the router is unaffected, but the router loses connection to the internet. In such cases I am forced to turn to my iPhone hotspot.

I would like the Mac mini to use the hotspot for network activities once connected to it, but because ethernet is set to higher priority in the Network settings than wifi, I find that I need to go into the Settings app to manually disable the ethernet or change the service order for the hotspot to work. This is because from Mac mini’s perspective, the ethernet connection itself continues to be available, notwithstanding that it’s not connected to the internet any more.

So my question is this: is there a way to set up the network settings so that ethernet take priority to wifi when the Mac mini is not connected to any hotspot, but when it’s connected to a hotspot, the hotspot take priority to the ethernet regardless of whether the ethernet is connected or not.

My problem arises because both the wireless internet to my routher and connection to hotspot both use the same wifi service, which is placed below ethernet on the Network settings.

Obviousky I don’t want to just flip the order because then my Mac would connect to wifi and ignore the ethernet during the ordinary times.

Is there, for example, a way to enable two separate wifi services on Mac, with one wifi service only being able to be used for hotspot connections, and the other wifi only for the wireless connection to router? I know it’s possible to have more than one wifi service on network settings but I dont know if there’s a way to dedicate a service to a specific type of connection or network. If this was possible, I think I would be able to set the network setvice priority as follows:

1. Wifi (dedicated to hotspot connections)
2. Ethernet
3. Wifi (dedicated to wireless connections to router)

Help would be really appreciated. Thank you.
