Is there a way to set up auto-reply for text messages? For example, in email, one can set up auto vacation response and the response goes out regardless of whether or not the computer is powered on, whether or not you're logged in, etc. To the best of my understanding, the only auto-reply for text messages requires that the phone be powered on. Is there a type of auto reply that would work if the phone were off or had no wifi/cellular connection?

Mail auto-reply only works if you have a provider that allows you to set rules on their server. For auto-replies, most do.

For example, if you use Apple Mail on a Macbook, you can set rules to do an auto-reply, but when mail isn't running, the auto-replies will stop.

There's no way to get an auto-reply to iMessages as Apple doesn't offer that feature.

If the SMS auto reply worked with the phone powered off, then wouldn't it have to be a function of the carrier and not Apple?

SMS yes, iMessage no.

So for both, you'd need both. I don't know about every carrier, but I'm not aware of one which has that function.

This has been a jailbreak feature since 2011. But you cannot do it without one. Im sure Apple will let us in 10 years or so.
