Is there a way to store documents on my iPhone 4?

I would like to permanently store a few documents on my phone - so I can refer to them anytime ( My CV, my bikes suspension settings, etc. ) - as PDF, or .doc.

How can I do this - I've emailed them to myself and can read the attachments - but can't see an option to download them to my phone.

If they are PDFs, there should be an option to open them in iBooks, which I believe will save them on the device permanently.
