Is there a way to turn off the horrible Smart Reply in Messages in 15.1?

I can't find a way. This is brutally terrible and I may just turn off AI.

I did turn off AI solely because of this obtrusive feature that generates awful suggestions. I would keep AI on if there was a way to disable Smart Reply in Messages.

This seems to work:

Settings > General > Keyboards > Predictive Text [toggle off]

EDIT: I believe it’s system-wide, not specific to Messages.
