Yes, it is called the "Buy an iPod Touch" option. You'll find it in the settings panel.

theres also another option, buy the unlocked freakishly expensive version thats the same price as 2 or more new/refurb iPod touch

I know there's ipod touch, but i was wondering if i am able to use iphone 3g as ipod only.

you're probably asking why I want to do this. I was gonna get a 8gig ipod nano for my mother for present but 8gig iphone costs 199 also. So I was gonna get her 8gig iphone and tell her to use that for ipod. She then can make the choice to keep her (currently using) phone and just use that as ipod or change her phone to iphone.

My gf is going to use my old 1 gen iphone as i upgraded to 3g. She is going to port to att from verizon, so we're trying to get a phone for a subsidized price as a back up or sell it or something or give it to my mother for present. After she gets new phone activated, just take out the sim and use it on 1st gen iphone.

So if i jailbreak the iphone 3g, I can use it as a IPOD? Is the jailbreak out for iphone 3g?

You can only get the iPhone 3G for the $199 price if you sign a new two year contract with AT&T.

why is she going to use the sim card from the iphone 3g in the original? it won't give the original iphone 3G speeds and stuff...just a sim card that says 3G but just that instead of saying 3G on the top of the screen it will say E or EDGE :D

Well because that sim will have her number on it when she activates it. She doesn't care about 3g or edge.

don't jailbreak little buddy. Here is what you do. Restore your iPhone 3g and when the restore is done iTunes will ask you if you want to set up as new iPhone or restore from backup. At that point DO NEITHER. Eject the iPhone and remove the sim card. Then boom you have your iPhone that has no sim but can use all the features.

Just buy an iPod Touch or the iPod Nano. You're going to try to jump through 15 hoops to save not much money, and you can only get the 8GB iPhone for $200 with a 2-year commitment, which INCLUDES THE $30 DATA PLAN. In other words, having your girlfriend sign up for it won't do you any good.

You could probably check out eBay for an iPod Touch that maybe someone got for buying a new Mac and didn't want. You can also check on refurbs, which will save you about $30.

In conclusion, don't even think about trying it. I'm worried that you'll suck yourself into a few hundred bucks of commitment over trying to get a slight upgrade.

Apple often has referbished iPods that are often times great deals. If I was looking to save a buck, I would go that route.

I saved $10 on a 1GB Shuffle that way. Others are often about $30 off, so that's definitely the best way to save a buck. About the only difference in them is you get a plain white box instead of the ones from a store.

I just checked Apples referbished site and you can get an 8GB iPod touch for $199. The same price as the iPhone, but with no monthly fees.

here's an idea. since you're already upgrading to 3g, and you have a 1st gen, and you plan on getting mom a 3g, give the gf the 3g , and mom the first gen, which is proven to work as an ipod...problem solved

Thanks for all the comments guys.

I asked the ATT CS if my gf is able to get the 3g iphone and she change her plan to 1st gen iphone using the 1st gen iphone. And they said she is able to do that. So she won't be stuck in $30 data plan if she uses 1st gen instead of 3g.

Yea that would be easy way to do it. But my gf doesn't want to pay $15 extra for 3g, she rather have the cheaper plan w/o 3g. She said she doesn't need 3g and GPS. So first dips goes to my gf for my 1st gen lol. She said she wanted my 1st gen when I asked her first so..
