I understand why Maps locks itself down while in CarPlay. You shouldn't be messing around with that while you're driving. But what about the passenger?

I was driving yesterday and thought it would be nice if my passenger could search and add destinations while we're out driving. I didn't check if this was possible through CarPlay though so maybe that's why?

I find this annoying also. If you're pulled over and completely stopped (or the passenger like you said) then you should be able to interact with it.

While I agree, we both know that’s not what would be happening 99 times out of 100. The passenger has their own phone so they could still do this, but not add it to CarPlay obviously.

The whole point of CarPlay is to keep the driver off the phone so I don’t expect they’re going to give too many options here.

Right but it's not as if scrolling through pages of CarPlay apps or interacting with the apps themselves can't also be a big distraction.

Just let me easily list all of the upcoming steps with maps and I'd be happy.

When we are all in the car we more often than not have her phone plugged in doing the navigation and music and she can use her phone fine. In fact it can sometimes get annoying as she has automatically start media playing on and some things like social media, some websites etc will cut in and stop the music playing via Apple Music.

She can also do things on the maps on her phone if required. She will often set it going from the phone or change things from the phone and while it does stop the current navigation running once she sets it going then it starts on the CarPlay view again. We were travelling back from holiday yesterday and only really using the satnav for traffic updates as i know the way and she decided to check some timings from one place to another in France when we are there in the summer. As the starting location wasnt our current one the CarPlay screen said it couldnt display the route in question but once it was changed back to a our ongoing journey it just started back up again.

It seems to be a function of the car's set up. On my car (a Jaguar), I can interact with the map search while driving. When traveling, I have to be stopped with most rental cars.
