So for iPhones, when you enable "Find My Iphone," you also enable "Activation Lock." Read about it here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5818

I don't have my iPad in front of me, but my question is, do older-gen iPads have something similar? How do I activate the iPad equivalent of Activation Lock, if it even exists on iPads. Is it the same as iPhones, i.e. enabling Find My Iphone (doesn't make sense since it is an iPad).

Yes, it works on iPads, too, as indicated in the article you quoted. Even though it's called "Find My iPhone", it locates iPads, as well.

How about in OS X? I guess they haven't quite gotten that far yet?

I know my iMac appears as an option on the "Find my iPhone" section of iCloud, but it seems that the service wouldn't work too well considering that my computer has to be on for the service to find it.

If the computer were to be stolen, it likely wouldn't be on for an extended period of time because the person using it wouldn't have my password to log in. (and would just wipe the computer)
