Stuffit Expander just plain refuses to work on my computer. The program opens up but doesn't seem to even attempt to extract any .sit files. If I drop a sit file on the Stuffit Expander icon in the doc the program starts up and then quits leaving nothing expanded.
Every time I've ever had to use anything Stuffit I've found nothing but frustration. Imo its a horrible disgusting application and compression method.

Is there any kind of freeware expander out there?

PS This is a fresh install of Tiger only a few days old with iLife '06, MSN Messenger, Tomato Torrent, VLC and Microsoft Office installed. That's it.

I had the same problem. I read from the stuffit-site, that the problem has something to do with the update checker. So, the solution:

-disable your network-connection temporarily
-(maybe reboot?)
-now open stuffit
-disable "Check updates automatically"
-re-enable network-connection

Now it should work. I hope I didn't miss any phase, but if it doesn't work like this, you can find it from the stuffit-site somewhere. But anyway, the solution is to prevent the Update-checker from seeing network and then it will run for you to disable it.

Other than Stuffit Expander (it's free), not for Stuffit compressed files. It's Stuffit Expander or nothing. Of course, if it's a zipped file, the built-in unzipper should kick in.
