Is there an alternative to the Now Playing glance in watchOS 3?

I know the music app can be added to the new dock, but what about controlling other music players e.g. Spotify?

The music app can't control other apps. However, the "now playing" glance has been turned into a stand alone app. So yes, you can dock it to restore the functionality of the glance. Just Don't get it mixed up with the "now playing" in the Apple Music app.
