I had a look on iclarified but they only have redsn0w which is tethered, I reboot my device alot so can't be doing with having to jailbreak all the time, my iphone is currently on 4.0.1 and jailbroken but it crashes quite a bit so I wanna start again from scratch.

No. The new jailbreak is tethered for all iDevices. But if you have the shsh files saved for 4.0.1 you can restore your iPhone and you should be fine.

Or, if you have the shsh saved for 4.1 and you have a Mac, you can use PwnageTool to upgrade to 4.1 (untethered).

The dev team site states:

"This PwnageTool also contains a 4.2.1 bundle for iPhone3G owners…for all else, it’s still only 4.1. If you have an iPhone3GS with an old bootrom, use redsn0w for an untethered 4.2.1 jailbreak"

That's at least 1 idevice that isn't tethered.

I realize the team's post on this is confusing as @#$@ and ridiculously lengthy.

Thanks for the clarification. I've read the post a few times and somethings just don't stick.

Can someone tell me step by step what I need to do then to start from scratch with a clean jailbroken iphone 4? Obviously don't want to lose my mobile numbers etc.

Currently its on 4.0.1 and its jailbroken.

Cheers.

iP4 will be tethered. Anyhow, update your device with iTunes to 4.2.1. Then get redsn0w and an official 4.2.1 ipsw for the ip4 from apple.
