I am trying to copy some 24/96 ALAC files I have on my library but itunes will not do it. Is there a third party music player for iOS that supports ALAC?

I don't know if there are any alternative ALAC players, however my guess is that this is a hardware problem anyway. If the iPad can't playback hi-res audio then using a different player isn't going to help. Does iTunes load 16/44.1 ALAC files on to iPads?

Your iPad supports and plays 16-Bit. It can also play 24-Bit avi. However the iPad's hardware doesn't support 24-Bit. So it gets down converted when played. So it's a complete waste of resources.
