I noticed a lot of folks ordering from their carrier's website, like AT&T. Is there any difference at all between ordering from them and from Apple directly?

I always prefer to order from Apple directly. Apple asks for information to verify eligibility from AT&T during the ordering process. I would assume that there is no real major difference.

No difference at all. Ordered mine from ATT a few hours ago with no problems. 5 minute process.

I noticed AT&T includes an upgrade fee of $18 while Apple doesn't. Why do they do that?

You think if I buy it from Apple, AT&T will charge the fee anyway when I activate it?

The $18 dollar fee will show up in your bill irrespective of who you order from. In the end it's AT&T that is billing you not Apple.

I believe Apple charges a restocking fee ONLY if you want to return the phone for full refund. If it's an exchange, Apple won't charge a restocking fee

Yes there is a difference. Apple controls the supply, so Apple always comes first. If you don't believe me. Read about Radio Shack and AT&T when "promised" deliveries weren't actually met.

When ordering from Apple, you always face the possibility of getting your iPhone a day before it comes out. That's happened to me twice now.
