Let's say I find a great video on the internet. Is there a free and legal way to separate the audio file only? Is there a software program that will do this?

And if there is nothing that's free, do you suggest buying a certain music/mixing program out there that has this capability?

Thanks in advance.

quicktime 7 will do this, as will QTx, as will mpeg stream clip, as will any of the iMovie programs.

audacity MIGHT do it - i dont recall.

handbrake will certainly do it.

If you are talking about YouTube: http://www.video2mp3.net/ and http://vidtomp3.com/.

QuickTime 7 can export audio from a video, though this might be tied to the Pro version.

Btw, why is this in Community Discussion?

I wasn't sure if I should have put this into the iPod/iTunes discussion forum.

Well anyway, my friend has a PC (which I don't use), but I assume quicktime 7 is probably available as a free download for Windows 2000 and Windows XP which he has on his machines.

Anyway, thanks for the answers.

any luck here 63?

I told my friend and he's been successful and is very happy. And many thanks to all of you here.

I don't much do digital music myself, but it's nice to know one can easily separate video and audio from each other.
