Is there any particularly safe way to remove a 2nd display connected w. Thunderbolt?

I use a second monitor connected with Thunderbolt. Is there any particularly safe way to remove it? I just pull it out of the Thunderbolt port. Should I turn the monitor off first? Something else perhaps? I've never had any problems but I do wonder if there is a better way to do it.
