I am debating between buying a 5S running 7.1.2 and another one running 8.1.

I plan on jailbreaking it but all of my tweaks have not been updated for iOS 8 yet and I'm worried they might never be, not to mention shortcuts and wifi not working on iOS 8.

My question is, is there any advantage to a 5S running 8.1 over 7.1.x or will I be fine? Does it run any faster with 7.x? Thanks!

You mentioned jailbreaking...when 8.1.1 rolls out you likely will have to wait for a new jailbreak. The advantage would be having an iPhone on the latest firmware AND jailbroken. The updates to the tweaks will come. Plus you'll have cool new features like continuity.

I just did mine. Wifi calling is an upgrade. I jb too. Smooth so far. Handoff/continuity works good

How about the wifi issues and keyboard shortcuts, do they work now on 8.1? Those are dealbreakers for me.

If you wait, you won't be able to upgrade to 8.1 once Apple stops signing it's the only jail breakable version.

I am not aware of any keyboard issues. I haven't had any wifi issues; though today I am experiencing some issues with the wifi @ work. Not sure if it's with the isp or my device.

I've had absolutely no issues with the jailbreak. There aren't many apps upgraded to work with iOS 8, but they'll be coming, I'm sure.

I would expect it to run faster on 7.x. However, whether the degradation will be perceptible to you or not is your call. However, if you look at the features column, you will have to decide what makes sense - Apple Pay is out due to lack of hardware, Continuity? Battery Usage meter? and so on.
