I have the 5k iMac and using their Apple display as a second monitor.

Next to each other, it's kind of sad to see that the Apple display can't get the resolution of the 5k monitor.

I would love the extra real-estate.

So, I am looking at the Asus 4k monitor for about $500

However, before even considering that, I am wondering if there is any heavy speculation that Apple will bring a 4k+ Cinema Display to the market for those that want to use a second monitor?

Cinema Display has been dead for years. If Apple will do a new display it would an updated Apple Thunderbolt Display based on USB-C ports. Likely the monitor would also handle smaller resolutions to be backwards compatible with older Macs. There will just need to be adapter cables from DisplayPort to USB-C.

We will know by mid September.

If we don't see a new thunderbolt-based 4k or 5k display from Apple with the release of the Skylake Macs, I would guess that Apple has decided that it's time to "exit the display business".

... Just as they did with the printer business some years ago.
