Hi,

I just purchased the 16". I'm wondering if there is any sense formatting and reinstalling macOS on the new machine, or is it ok to just start using it as is? I'm asking in terms of pre-installed software/useless OS files that could come with a pre-installed OS from the factory.

No need. You can remove the preinstalled software Apple installs like the iWork Suite stuff. However unless you actually need the disk space I would keep it. Free SSD space (assuming you are under 90% capacity) is just wasteful if you NEVER use.

The pre-installed software is actually pretty good and can save your butt in a pinch due to its integration with the iOS and iPadOS versions.

Some of the preinstalled software has metal (hardware) level programming that many 3rd party replacements can't provide. And if they could you would be looking at pretty expensive apps. iMovie for example, no where near as powerful as Premiere, Resolve or Final Cut but if the same app was made by a 3rd party dev it could sell for 50 bucks or so all day. If you were to buy Microsofts office suit software at full price (buy the codes on eBay for 1 dollar) you'd be looking at ~100 bucks. Personally if it wasn't for compatibility I would prefer to use Pages over Word all day long...

Question:
"I'm wondering if there is any sense formatting and reinstalling macOS on the new machine"

Answer:
No. It makes NO sense at all. Just use it.

You could wipe and reinstall, but it would be a waste of time. Apple doesn't bloat their operating systems the way other manufacturers do, so wiping and reinstalling the OS right out of the gate is a waste of time and effort.. much easier to remove apps you know you won't be using. I would hold on to the iWork apps, though, I began learning about them a couple years ago and can't live without them now.

This is the second thread recently talking about wiping and reinstalling a new machine. Is this coming from Windows users maybe? The idea makes no sense to me.
Those are the same people who buy new cars and immediately replace the engine and brakes. ;)

I wiped my 16", did supplemental update then clean installed using internet recovery. Got rid of the Apple junk, 10 GBs worth.

To each their own but I feel warm and fuzzy.

I can understand why some people would do that and I'm not judging but just to clear things up, macOS isn't Windows and you don't have to fight to get rid of the preinstalled cruft; you can just uninstall those apps and you'd get the same space back. As you said, though, to each their own so it's all good.

By "Apple junk", are you referring to Pages/Numbers/iMovie?
