Is there any way for me to turn off edge?

I have edge always turning on, on my iphone 1st generation and at the end of the month my parents have to pay a bill of 500 CHF cos my edge turns on randomly and my iphone does not recognise there is wifi for the first couple of seconds and only when i go on internet i realise i am using edge not wifi, and those seconds cost a lot.

So is there anyway to disable edge?

Why don't you turn on airplane mode and then turn on wifi?

You should try to find a way to get on a voice-only plan with your carrier.

I got my iphone in ukraine and had to unlock it so I dont suppose I can actually do anything with my carrier can I. But i thought it was possible to somehow turn off edge, when i was in ukraine i managed to do it, but now i cant seem to find the option

You don't want to turn off EDGE, you want to turn off all data. There are two things I can think of to try

1.) Call your service provider and have them disable all data on your line.

2.) Go to this link on your iPhone browser : http://www.unlockit.co.nz/unlockit/?p=1
I don't know if you can type in custom settings, but if you enter everything blank, and then update the APN on your iphone, you will have "invalid" settings to access the internet over the cell network on your iphone. This will prevent any data from being used except from WiFi.
