I often work on the go and have to close/re-open my Mac multiple times frequently. I find that manually having to go to the wifi icon and clicking my phone's instant hotspot is adding a lot of unnecessary friction. I would really like for the instant hotspot to behave like this:
  • If there is a known wifi network avaiable, (e.g. at home or at the office) the Mac connects to that first
  • If there are no known networks available (e.g. if I am at a coffee place or on the go) the Mac automatically pairs with my iPhone and connects to instant hotspot - without me needing to click on the Wifi icon, select my iPhone, and waiting several seconds for the whole pairing and connection to happen each time the Mac wakes up from sleep.
I know this may seem like a small thing, but when opening and closing my Mac multiple times a day it really does get annoying. Needing to manually click on the icon seems very un-Apple to me. I love my M1 Macbook but this really makes me miss my previous laptop with a built-in LTE modem that would auto-connect on its own.
I have already selected that my Mac should auto-join the hotspot network, however, this does not seem to be achieving what I want, as the Mac does not auto-connect unless the hotspot has already been activated by another device such that my iPhone already is broadcasting the hotspot wifi network.

Does anyone know of any tweaks, apps or third-party hacks that would achieve what I am looking for? I think that from a technical point of view this should be trivial to achieve.
