My best friend and i share each others daily fitness stats in the fitness app and we love it and has gotten us to be healthier all around.

Currently at this very moment, due to Find My, I can tell they are at their local gym working out on a treadmill. Is there any way I can send them some sort of encouragement to let them know to keep it up?

Not wanting to be invasive with text messages, as we normally don’t text each other unless it’s later into the evening.

I feel like the Nike Run Club App used to allow you to send 'cheers' to another user while they were in a workout.

I think you’re right.

The majority of my friends from the Nike run app have switched exclusively to the Apple Fitness app.

Same here. I moved on too, but I don't know of any way to interact with them while they're working out in any app other than Nike Run Club.

To echo others, yes you can immediately comment in the Nike Run Club app through a feature called “Cheers” that will let you select pre set emoji with pre selected phrases OR you can record a quick voice note.

For the Fitness app, you should be able to use the feature from the notification you get after a friend you share fitness data with completes a workout. Granted this feature only works after their workout is complete, so not entirely what you seek. But it lets you give kudos or trash talk.

Maybe WatchOS 9 may bring that functionality of commenting when a friend starts a workout.

Thank you for the reply

What do you mean the notification I receive after they complete a workout? My friend does cycling daily in the fitness app but I’ve never received any kind of notice that they’re working out, even after the fact. I have to open the fitness app myself and go to sharing and tap their daily progress and then I can see if they did a workout or not.

You’re welcome, but this is interesting. It sounds like the two of you have shared your fitness data with each other. After that is done, you should receive Apple Watch notifications when that friend or any other friend you have invited to share your Apple Watch fitness data with, and vice versa. When anyone you share fitness data with completes a workout, earns an award, or competes their best workout activity, you should receive a notification. At that point you can choose to encourage, talk trash or do nothing. In the Apple Watch settings under messages, you can even curate your own replies/quips for normal things you say to show up in the list for available replies. See the examples from below which I just took from my own Apple Watch.

1. Workout Completed Notification generated by Apple Watch.
2. Details on the Completed Workout by said friend.
3. An available list of replies. Apple has replies based on the workout completed.
4. After Apple’s preselected replies, are the replies you saved in the Apple Watch settings under messages (like if you have common catchphrases, inside jokes, etc.)
5. The Apple Watch fitness notifications aren’t just for workouts completed, but awards achieved or if a friend closes all of their rings.

I hope these screenshots have helped explain my response, but it sounds like you do not receive these notifications when your friend completes a workout, closes their rings or earns an award?

I had no idea. In fact, I had this notification feature turned off. I had never once received any sort of notification for when the other person completed a workout or closed any of their rings.

I spoke to them about it and they told me they get notifications every single time I close one of my rings or workouts or get an award.

I just turned on the notifications and should start receiving them. Thank you so much for opening my eyes to this feature I didn't even know was a part of AW.

Awesome, I’m glad you got it sorted out!
Hopefully you enjoy the feature. Be sure to talk some trash occasionally for a laugh!

So I’m back asking for a small tiny bit of help.

I have unmuted my friend as pictured in order to receive notifications (didn’t even know this was set to muted) and today they closed all of their rings and completed a cycling working as well but not once did I receive any sort of notification.
