if I use the apple bike workout it always records my heart rate and it kills my battery by the end of the day with only 1.5 hours of riding my battery is at 15% if I use starva even with do not record heart rate it does.

That’s not right in any circumstances unless you’ve got an old watch with poor battery?

I routinely go bike riding for 3+ hours and it kills 40% max of my battery.

That’s on an S3. I think your battery is shot unfortunately.

It would be interesting to know how long his day is.

And what settings he's using to disable the heart rate monitor on the watch.

Yes I know he did. My S5 has much more battery at the end of the day after 1-2 hours of various workouts. I wear my watch for about 15-16 hours a day.

it is a apple 4 watch before I started using it to record my rides I would have about 50% battery left. day is from 6 to 8:30 or so. I thin kit may be worse when I commute it gets used two times for about 35 minutes and maybe a time or two for 20 minutes or so.

Your battery is quite poor. I have +one year old AW4 - today after 1:30 running (connected Stryde footpod + music Airpods Pro) - 51% left (now is 17:02).

Probably won’t make a huge difference but I’d put on airplane mode and theater lode while you’re riding. That will help with battery life. How much, I’m not sure. The other option is to pick up a second cable and just charge it for a few minutes at work.

The watch automatically checking heart rate constantly probably consumes battery a lot also.

When you say end of the day do you mean end of your work day or end of your day before you go to bed? If its the latter then I don't see what the problem is. Its lasting you all day until you are done with it. If its the end of the workday then that's a problem.

Turn on Power Saving Mode in Watch app Settings Workout (on you connected iPhone)

hmmm, it says this only affects walking and running workouts, though.

this disables the constant heart rate monitoring during the workout. Your watch is always monitoring heart rate anyway - just at periodic intervals.

But not for riding for some reason. Sometimes before I go to bed I hit the 10% mark and even though I don’t do anything I’m the evenings it seems to go down fairly fast then. I did 2:30 minute ride today and it is at 42% at 1:35. It seems to do worse with multiple rides verses one longer one. But I will see tonight. I get a lot more notifications on weekdays. Ina couple months I can hook my phone directly to my bike and I won’t need my watch to keep track. My Lumos helmet should keep track but it does not connect reliably to my phone the same with my garmin bike gps or when it does or does not always connect to the Heath app.

Depending on what you use to track your cycling, you could probably use the workout power save mode, record the activity as a run, the. Change the type to bike ride in the app. That would work on Strava, etc although I don’t think you can edit them in the native workouts app.

AW4 here, when I use the apple app to track my mtn bike rides of ~ 2hrs my battery life is typically at ~ 45-50% at the end of the day (5am-8:30pm). I haven't paid close attention but it seems that the typical bike ride takes 20-25ish% of the battery ... my watch is ~ 18mos old

well you cant use the outdoor run for biking it only gave me 1.98 miles out of 10 miles. I guess once you get upto speed it stops recording. I turned heartrate recording off on strava but it still records.

That sucks!

I did go for a mtn bike ride this morning, 15 miles, 1hr 50 min (app only gave me 98 min) and battery went from 89% to 74% ... have you actually looked at how much battery is being used during your workout? You say you get down low at the end of the day, there could be something else using all that power?

I would experiment with Power Save mode and if you want the Heart Rate data get a chest strap to pair, not advertising but I have a Polar H10 and it works superbly with the Apple Watch.

I suspect the detail that says 'Walk and Run' may be misleading but it doens't harm to try that mode as an experiment does it?

ya I will I don't need heart rate it is pretty much the same every ride. run did not work so I doubt walk will either. I can record from my phone and that will save my watch battery. I tured off heart rate in the heath app but strava kept recording it. I may need to reinstall the app I did it on my watch and ill test it on the ride home.

Apologies if I missed it, but, is this GPS or cellular AW? Can see bigger drain on cellular as it is not using phone for GPS "boost" (seem to recall that it uses phone for GPS assistance when present).

That said, seems awfully big drain: my 3, daily workouts outside of 2-3hrs, and end of day, ~75% left. But also do not do calls or use it unless a notification comes in.

just gps. but my watch is at 50% with no recording by the end of the day. notifications on the watch and I use it to control what I am playing but thats about it. not sure what drains the battery so much but its been the case for most of my watches.

ok I got the heart rate turned off when I got to work I was at 84% then I wrote 30 minutes and when I checked when I was going to leave my battery was at 34% so something is sucking the juice. but How do you tell what's using the battery on the watch? I don't see the option like I do on the phone.

Do you a) have a wifi network at work with a login portal and b) often leave your phone at your desk while you go elsewhere in the building?

nope phone and watch always in contact. Get notifications and I use it to control what I am playing on my phone. and a few simple texts at most.

Ah ok. I was just asking because I had to revert back to carrying my phone in my pocket. Not doing so and my watch trying and failing to join Wifi all day would have my series 5 at about 10% by 6pm.
