Is there any way to stop emails in mailbox from disappearing?

I always hated this not sure if its because I'm using Microsoft Exchange w/ Gmail but emails after some time just disappear. Is this normal behavior? I know they don't delete as they are there if I sign into my email from my mac but they just disappear.
