Is it possible to save a "free" video podcast to my computer, so I can sync with my iPod?

Yes.
Option 1: The video is already formatted for iPod/iPhone - just drag it on your iPod in iTunes or select the podcast in the list of podcasts you want to sync with your iPod.

Option 2: The video is NOT formatted for iPods. Select the video, and from the "Advanced" menu select "Create iPod or iPhone Version".
