Short answer. No. Firmware is not downgradeable.

will a genius be able to re-flash it or something ? there seems to be a lot of people on other forums who are having problems with this firmware update.

No, the genius will not do this. For two reasons:
1: most geniuses aren't smart enough to know how (if it is possible)
2: it might not be possible (where would they get the previous version?)

I haven't installed the upgrade. I doubt I will. You say it makes your computer run hotter? Do you know the exact degree where your fans kick in?

I just installed it. The fans definitely come on sooner, and go to a higher RPM for the same load, but I don't know if it is any hotter. In fact, the extra fan use should keep it cooler. I don't mind since I usually run SMCFanControl to keep the fans at about 3K RPM so the top case isn't uncomfortably warm. Just as long as it doesn't affect battery life too much (I haven't tested it on battery power yet).

not hotter here, but I do notice the fan more...

wonder if there is any relation to the newly exended warranty on the 8600GT video card... if they run the fan more often, maybe they payout of for less video card failures?

Probably has to do with the 8600.

If this update requires 10.5.7, does that mean I can't go back to anything before 10.5.7? What if I want to reinstall from my CD, which has something like 10.5.1 (or was it 10.5.3)?

There's no way I'm installing this and there's no reason anyone else should either. All it's going to do is delay the inevitable. I want this thing to die for the third time and be rid of it for good.

I just booked an appointment with a genius on Friday - hopefully they can restore the firmware my MBP originally shipped with...
