Seen a few articles claiming the next MBP's should be with us in a week or so, will Apple be having an official announcement event? Like, press invitations being issued, etc?

probably not. aside from the macbook air last year, they've not had a press event for new macs in a very long time.

The only Mac annoucement Apple made were either for new models or redesigns, never for spec bumps (not even the updates in February).

if it's just a speed bump or so...
the apple store will be down for a while, then it will re-appear.
the macbook pro's will have the word "NEW" next to them.

that's it.

We don't even know if there will be a refresh so it's fruitless speculating about whether or not there will be an official announcement. Unless there is a redesign, there won't be one regardless of when the refresh comes.

I get the impression that people still think this is going to be an update. While technically it most assuredly not effect the baseline computers. The update will probably be a BTO option not an across the board kinda thing.

The new CPUs will probably be pretty nice - Intel usually does a nice job with updates, they may even be 5-10% faster clock for clock or use less juice ( maybe public knowledge, I'm sorry I have not been following teh semi ind as much as in the old days).

I am quite curious about the GPU, if these units will get something newer.

Not sure why people are voting you down, so I voted you up. :)

OT: How did you do this: 'w/3.1 Logic Board'

Is it an easy swap?

Drop the mother board in, then you go oohhh the rear fan isn't the same between the two models..ebay a new rear fan and you now have a 64bit EFI quad core 3.0GHZ mac pro...I made the presentation to my wife and she said just go get a new one...disassemble and ebay everything!!! thats the stage we're at right now. I think I see a hex core MP in the future I dunno if I'll wait for TB to arrive or not probably not with 5 internals available.

It was fun but now it's done :0)

Stop expecting an announcement. It's not official, and we don't even know if these spec bumps exist or not. The tightening supplies can be attributed to the unibody factories in China shutting down.

Although a spec bump is a possibility, there is also a chance that Apple may not give the MacBook Pro a spec bump.
Apple will DEFINITELY NOT give the MacBook Pro a GPU bump mid-cycle. Macs are CPU-centric, if you haven't noticed. As long as the GPU is average or above average, Apple will not see a reason to give it a bump.

No one knows if there is going to be an announcement or not, except the handful of people at Apple.

Case shortage could accelerate the Carbon Fibre case (if true).

I'll be watching the rumour sites for the next few days.
