As far as I know there has never been a desktop Facebook app, only for iPhone and iPad
And those are still there in the iTunes app store

FaceTab is a pretty good app that sits in your menu bar.

There certainly have always been smaller companies doing Facebook notification etc. type apps but Facebook itself has never released a desktop app for the Mac or PC.
