This has been bothering me for quite some time. I can't seem to find any "up" button, unix command: "cd ..", in Finder for Leopard. Is it not present or am I just missing it?

You can have a path finder button on the toolbar, or CMD+Click on the little icon in the center of the top of the toolbar :)

It's true that it's annoying that the Cmd+Up arrow key can't be a shortcut bar - never has been able to... but it would be a useful button to have.

I prefer the cmd+up shortcut over a button in the menu bar, as cmd+down goes down a level (as you'd expect), so it involves less movement overall = faster work speeds.

True, but it wouldn't hurt to have an up/down button in the customisation options, like the back/forward buttons because newbies like my dad just can't get used to keyboard shortcuts!
