I understood "spec-wise" it's the same as the 8GB/2nd gen. (i.e. no technical difference at all) but Apple kept it with that spec. to keep a $199 model in the range.

The 8GB 3G is basically the 2G with OS3.1 and a new bootrom that makes it harder to jailbreak but hardware\feature wise it has not changed.

so why would they call it a 3rd gen? thats ridiculous to me! i feel like im getting cheated.
i mean i rather get the 2nd gen so i can jailbreak it.

Must of read it wrong then.

Indeed. Feature-for-feature, the late 2009 8GB iPod touch is functionally identical to a 2nd generation iPod touch after upgrading the latter to the latest OS.

Apple claims to have done some cost reductions under the hood to enable them to keep pricing under control, but none of those changes result in functional differences.

The big difference is that the price of OS 3.x is included with the hardware price for late 2009 8GB iPod touches, but OS version 2.x was included in the price of older iPod touches and 3.x is an additional purchase.

The new 32GB and 64GB iPod touches released at the same time as the late 2009 8GB iPod touch do include tangible hardware improvements, and additional features that were not previously available.

Ok, question for you guys, hopefully an easy one as you seem fairly clued up! :)

I am completely new to iTouches, and am getting my son an 8GB 3rd Gen for his b'day. I would also like to get him a dock for this, of the type that it sits in and uses the bottom connector. My understanding at the moment is that physically, the 2nd and 3rd Gens are the same, and that docks designed for 2nd Gens should also work with the new 3rd Gens.

Would the above seem like a fair statement? I am just a bit wary of going buying a dock, and when he goes to try and use it, it turns out to be incompatible somehow.

Any advice much appreciated.

Yes. All docks, cases and other accessories that say they are for the 2nd gen would work with 3rd gen also.

...honestly, I would look at the next size up as they aren't much more expensive for much MORE capacity for your $$ to cost ratio...I know its a gift but how much music does your son have?

Movies in any decent format also take up a fair amount of space and 8 GB is pretty small these days (and I haven't even started talking about the app store yet)...

Also, check Walmart, Amazon, MacMall, MacConnection, etc... to get a better deal with the holiday season approaching... good luck with your hunt/decision...and get a good leather flip case to protect it.

Fully appreciate what you are saying, but he is only 9, and to be honest he isn't interested in watching films on it. If it were for me, then yes, i would spend the extra cash. However, it will likely be lucky if it lasts 6 months before it is either forgotton about, broken, or left at his backside somewhere while he's out!

I came here to post this, but saw that it already was posted.

I thought it was pretty clear that there is no 3rd-gen 8gb iPod Touch (as of now).
This is what is listed on Amazon as of this morning:

Apple iPod touch 8 GB (2nd Generation) [Previous Model]: $158.00
Apple iPod touch 8 GB (3rd Generation) NEWEST MODEL: $181.99

Seems pretty ridiculous as they are virtually the same iPod. Apple's site has the new one as Late 2009: http://support.apple.com/specs/#ipodtouch ... but still.

I was going to get my daughter the 8GB and after reading that the hardware was the same as the 2nd generation I got her a 2nd generation 16GB Touch for the same price on Apples refurb store. I would love to get her a 32GB, but out of my price range and the 16GB is perfect for her. So if you didn't get him the 8GB yet, look at the 16GB refrub one. Same price, twice the storage.
