I sell iPhone's for a living. Depending on the carrier you are looking at between 275.00 for a CDMA iPhone 4S 16GB or 325.00-350.00 for a GSM/factory unlocked iPhone 4S 16GB.

If the iPad is wifi only it's worth about $250-300, and maybe about $25 more if it has 3G capabilities.

You are looking at an even trade at most, I wouldn't give him a dime on top of the trade.
