Is this a good trade?

Would you trade a mid 2008 aluminum base model macbook for a Rev B macbook air with 120gb HD?

Also, can you swap the HD for a SSD? Thanks!

Really just depends what you want... If you want the macbook air for portability go for it... I would prolly do it since it seems you are getting a fairly good deal.

I sort of would, but I use my notebook heavily. It would probably be a good deal though regardless. You can always sell it and buy a 09 MBP and have some cash left over!

the 2008 macbooks lack firewire anyway, he really isn't giving up anything other than a few USB ports, I think it's a pretty great deal

That;s a pretty fantastic trade actaully. The rev B has the nvidia graphcs, right? if so, by all means go for it!

You can swap to SSD, it's a little tricky.... here http://www.anandtech.com/mac/showdoc.aspx?i=3226&p=13

It would be truly fantastic if it was SSD version (and bad for the Air owner, obviously).

The problem with the swap is that the link you posted refers to revision A, which used PATA-ZIF connector. It is actually possible to buy SSD with said connector. B and C use SATA-LIF, which, while it's a part of SATA 6 Gb/s standard, is so far impossible to find anywhere but in MacBook Air. Short of soldering you're stuck with HDD, unless you manage to get an SSD from MBA.

That said, B/HDD version is still better than any revision A and worth more than uMB.

Yes, it sounds like an excellent trade, especially if the MBA has SSD, and portability is the key consideration for you.

Cheers and good luck

Sounds like a really good deal to me. BUt think about if you nee an MBA ultraportable, or an MB that is more powerful but heavier.
