1. Is this a Momentus XT HYBRID with 4GB NAND and 7200RPM 500GB?
2. Is it good? Coz it's $101 [not kidding]

and I'm about to buy it.

And how do I update the firmware on this hybrid HDD?

The XT version is the hybrid with the SSD and traditional together. The non XT version is the standard drive. All XTs are 7200. The price is average, and I have one and like it, although some have had issues so be warned. The latest firmware is obtainable through Seagate's website with the instructions to flash to it. It is super easy and menu driven.

Yes it is a Momentus XT. You can get them online for that price on newegg, amazon, etc. Is that drive used? I wouldn't buy it if it's used. Get a new one.

Not an app. Burns the image to a disk, restart and follow the menu prompts.

Yep, restart the computer and hold down the 'C' button. That will go to a screen which asks you which startup volume you'd like (otherwise it always just automatically goes to your default startup disk) and follow the prompts.

C boots from optical. Alt asks where to boot from. D runs diagnostics from optical. T is target disk mode. Shift is safe mode.

Alt+Cmd+P+R is reset PRAM.

where's the link to the drive's latest firmware update?

ok i understand.

1. Download
2. Burn to CD
3. Restart, while on startup press "C"
4. Shut down
5. Drive FW updated

did i do anything wrong in the process i thought?

EDIT: Found it. http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=215451&NewLang=en

still wondering about the FW update process

i also want to reset PRAM and SMC

PRAM= alt cmd p r (thx cube!) while on startup
SMC=?

Reset SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964

Burn the iso as an image with Disk Utility. Do not burn it as a file.

After booting with this disc, you'll get some license/info page which you have to acknowledge, and then get a menu.

Have the machine with a full battery charge and plugged to the mains. Power off during any firmware update is terrible.

I think after flashing the updater will ask you to press some key to restart.

I would only upgrade if the drive gives you some trouble (eg: battery drain because of not spinning down, stalls, etc.)

I had got the drive with SD22 without noticing any trouble, and I just upgraded to SD23 which caused the disk not to spin down anymore. I had to wait for SD24, which did not fix my problem, and then SD25, which did.

But there's some people that report that SD25 didn't help them.

I don't remember that part. Just follow the instructions on the screen.

alreet.

already asked the store to order me a new momentus XT

will do the upgrades soon
