is this a stupid idea? (US iPhone in the UK)

ok, i want an iPod touch, but i also want an iPhone. theres no way i can afford the two, and i dont want to wait for months and months for the iPhone to come out in the UK, so do you think i could get an iphone from america, unlock it, and use it in the UK instead? would everything work (bar visual voicemail, obv) that way i could have all the cake, and eat it.

why dont you wait till tommorow and see what the even brings.. you may not have to wait months after all.

i should probably also have mentioned: i'm stuck in an 18month contract with o2 which doesnt finish until may 08

I would still wait and see as the iPhone is expected on O2 anyway so they may make it quite easy for you to change handset etc as locking wouldn't be an issue.
