I bought my 15' MacBook Pro in August of last year, and the battery is already down to 82.7% of the capacity. It's only had 142 full charging cycles. Should I get it checked out? My old 2012 MBP took about 7 years to get to the same capacity.

Battery needs to drop below 80% in order to have Apple replace it.
Do you have AppleCare on your MBP ?

Battery design has fallen from the old days - agreed.
My 2015 MBP 15" has 85% even after 5 years.

But the 16" MBP less than a year old is already at 80% at 75 cycles so I am quite disappointed as it was a pricey model ($2500).

I have AppleCare. But Apple says it shouldn't reach 80% until 1000 cycles, so I'm a little concerned.

Same here - I am quite shocked to see the 16" battery drop so much over 11 months of use and very low charge cycles (sat on a desk as a desktop for most of it's life).

What battery monitor app are you using ?

I think it's a thermal degradation caused by the heat of the Intel CPU.
My 16" runs super hot all the time while the 15" runs lukewarm....

I believe that if you were to switch over to the M1 which runs cold - the battery should last a lot longer.....

I use coconut battery. But the weird thing is I didn't have battery degradation issues on my old MBP on intel, so I'm hoping it's just a battery issue that doesn't require me to replace the entire laptop.

Macbook batteries are definitely not what they used to be, my mom had to take her 2 year old MBA in the other day because the computer couldn't even stay powered on without being plugged in. Battery is being replaced as we speak.

That number fluctuates, often. Here's a snapshot of the history of the battery in my 16", I've had it since mid-July. Look how wildly it moves! Between the two bottom entries all it did was sleep, from last night until 2 hours ago. Taking a SINGLE reading and interpreting that as your current status is invalid. If it goes for a while without going back up THEN consider that there may be an issue. Yes, I get that I have a few readings that are in the 80's but those are all the same cycle. I have not charged it since last night.

Coconut Battery readings never agree with one's laptop's reading %s or those taken at Apple stores. My laptop is at 77% with 800 cycles. Approaching battery replacement territory.

What app does Apple use to measure battery capacity ?

Isn't anything under 80% replaceable under warranty or applecare ?

I bought my 15' mid 2018, and the battery is already down to 85% of the capacity. I am at 43 full cycles.

Would have no idea what they use but have to believe their equipment is state of the art. Despite the lower readings the laptop is sadly now past all limits.

If you are on Catalina or Big Sur and have Battery Health Management on, turn it off and the battery health should rise to a higher level.

I don't think that is out of the ordinary, having low cycles doesn't mean a better battery and the same thing goes for high cycles meaning its a bad battery. I'm guessing it could be from the heat from usage and having it plugged in all the time.

What is the difference between optimized battery charging and manage battery longevity?
Thank You

maybe... but the laptop is randomly discharges from 100% to ~90% when plugged

Optimized charging learns your laptop usage and waits to charge it to 100% until later. Like if you leave it plugged in all night, to will go to 100% at like 4-5am. I’m guessing longevity is just artificially lowering capacity, that’s what Battery health management does at least.

My 2018 (but bought in 2019) 13" MBP was down to 81% after 200 cycles or so. However it suffered the standard butterfly keyboard issues (repeating keys etc) so had a new keyboard fitted under the repair program, Benefit of those is the battery is also replaced. Now at 99%.

Definitely thermal heat related!

My 16" MBP at less than a year with low cycles runs so much hotter with 80% capacity; while the 4 year old 15" MBP with over 400 cycles and 84% is much cooler.

Battery life sucks on the 16" because of the heat while the 15" is aging nicely.

both bad for the battery, even worse if combined
