when i go to empty the trash i get the are you sure box as below. isnt there meant to be something lile and exclaimation mark on the left hand side?

There should be a Finder icon.

By the way, it looks like you 'cut out' the picture manually. An easier way is to press Cmd-Shift-4 (your mouse will turn into a crosshair), then press Space (the mouse will turn into a camera), then click the window you want a picture of.

i did the grab a section of a screen. i didnt cut it out manually in some other programme. i keep forgetting hte shortcuts and that is the 1st one that worked! thanks for the advise.

any idea on how i can get the good old finder icon back?

ok this is just getting odd now. i emptied the trash again and it had a picture of a word file there?

Try repairing permissions. I had some similar problems and this seemed to help.

Have you restarted since this started happening? Does this problem (immediately) survive a reboot?

right i tried reparing permission and then restarted and now things see normal again. how odd!
