is this ok for my mbp? on lap...

I read that it's not good to place a laptop on your lap or a soft surface, I'm using a flat piece of plastic (box cover) to sit my mbp on to put on my lap is this ok to use till i get a lap desk/pad?

Yeah, you really just want some airflow underneath the computer. Using a piece of cardboard/plastic is really no different from placing it on a desk.

I've seen the computer cooling mats in shops and I don't know if they work or not but you could use that.
