I have a macbook pro running Snow Leopard 10.6.8

I've connected it to my TV using a mini displayport to vga connector and it works great.

What would be even better is if I could specify which one of the 4 virtual desktops to output to the TV so I could carry on using my mac using the other 3 .

At the moment all I do in "Displays" is check "Mirror Displays" but this outputs the current desktop, can I specify which one?

thanks in advance

What about NOT mirroring the internal display to the TV?

System Preferences > Displays >> Arrangement >>> Mirror Displays (but know, that the display with the lowest resolution determines the maximum resolution used on both, thus one display will have a lower than native resolution, except when both displays have the same native resolution)

All you need to do is extend your desktop as in don't mirror.
Next make the VLC player or with whatever application you watch videos on your TV show up on every space and maximize on the TV. It will stay there whatever you move around or do on the other spaces.

Ah, didn't thought of that, though using VLC Player in fullscreen mode makes the other screen black. Movist doesn't have that problem though.
