I have a Microsoft intellimouse hooked up to my g4 - i have the two side buttons mapped to expose, but I'd like for them to continue acting as forward/back buttons during web browsing. Is it possible to have it switch back to this when in Firefox?
 
probably could write an applescript for it, i don't know of any application that will allow you to do this though.
 
What you really want is USB Overdrive, which lets you configure your mouse on a per-application basis. It's shareware, but not terribly expensive and very popular from what I gather. I'd take a look, anyway.

If you're using the Microsoft Intellipoint software, you can make application specific settings.
