Dr. Mac - Run ScreenSavers right on your Desktop!

OK. Today's JWOT (Jag-Wire-Only-Tip) comes by way of one of my (other)
favorite OS X sites, none other than Mac OS X Hints. It's not exactly useful
but it's quite cool... to run your screen saver modules right on the
desktop. That's right... with just one command you can have StonerView,
Bumps, or my personal favorite, Marine Aquarium, running behind your windows
when your Mac is awake... It's strange but true.

All it takes is typing this command at the prompt (in Terminal, natch):

/System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Resources/ScreenSaverEngine
.app/Contents/MacOS/ScreenSaverEngine -background &

Be sure to remove any line breaks or spaces that may have crept in due to
email or web formatting when you copy and paste the command.

As soon as you press Return/Enter, whatever screensaver is selected in the
Screen Effects (its new name) System Preference pane now appears as the
desktop picture/pattern, behind your windows and icons! But it's ALIVE!

To end it all, just type Control-C (in Terminal) - (Or kill the PID).

Even on my dual gigahertz box it wasn't what you'd call blazing fast, but
it's interesting and certainly useable (if you must) with at least some
screen saver modules. Give it a try... it's kind of cool.

When I was young we used to call tips like this one Stupid Mac Tricks!

i did it & it's awesome. i've got the IX Xirtam (Matrix) screensaver as a wallpaper!!! no amount of smilies could describe how happy i am right now!!

only thing is that i can't get it to stop through Terminal, but it goes back to normal when i restart.

If you want to stop it you can type just type kill and the process number

Can't remember how to find the process numbers though

It is something like ax -ps

It is something like ax -ps

ps is the command you want. if you type man ps you will find the switches you want. ps -ax show all processes (a) including the ones without controlling terminals (x).

found out how to stop it!

you can go to Process Viewer & lookup the process 'screensaverengine' and then get info on that process & the process ID.

the other way is in Terminal after the command to start the screensaver has been run it will show the process ID.

so now i know how to stop & start the screensaver wallpaper, which is good because i just found out that you can't eject or insert CD's if the screensaver is running.

i LOVE this screen saver wallpaper thing. now that i have my matrix screensaver all i need to do i find a Matrix font & then change the system fonts.... he he.

what a bunch of crap...there have been porgrams that do this...but what is the point...it just seems kind of stupid to me...and why waste your cpu usage?

Very nice

I found also if you highlight the text in terminal and drag it to your desktop (creating a text clipping), the next time you want to do this, all you have to do is drop the text clipping onto terminal and it puts the command in, no fuss no muss.

I also made a clipping of the ps - ax | grep screensaver so I can find the process and kill it.

On my ibook 600mhz, it was a bit slow using the flurry screen saver.

i really need a Matrix font so i can have total Matrixness on my Mac.

come on, someone has to know where i can get a Matrix font? or someone has to have it? you've got to help me out, just put it up on iDisk or something.

Don't need the terminal....

just get "Cool Desktop". Pathetic name, but works well, without the GUI, and you can have it startup at login time.

An easier way

The easiest way to control the background screensaver effect is to get a copy of FackBore Effects from version tracker: it installs a system preference that lets you turn it on and off.

i don't mind having to use the Terminal, in fact i'm starting to get the hang of it and i'm actually starting to like using it.

i've still got a heap of screensavers that i want to try out, but for the moment i have an even bigger problem. i NEED the Matrix font, so i can change my system font to the Matrix one.

come on, i'm begging now! someone has to have it! or at least know where i can get it... please!!

i think you can get the aquarium screensaver form versiontracker.com, but it's only the demo, you'll have to register to have full functionality.

DUDE! You are not the only person in the world, aight? If no one knows where to get that font, they wont post. It's that simple. Did you try any mac font sites??



BTW, you can get the aquarium screensaver from versiontracker.com, it's called Marine Aquarium.

In addition, if you drag any file(except a text clipping) into the terminal, it copies its path to the command line. This is very useful for performing commands on files, instead of having to type the whole path out.

cb911, there are 2 matrix fonts. This one is called OCR-A:

and this one, used in the title etc:

The problem with this one, however, is that it only works for capital letters.

I have both of these fonts. Download them from here and here respectively.
