I have a MBP 3,1 (C2D 2,2GHz; 8600M GT) and have started in the last week to experience some strange trouble with it. Allow me to explain what I've observed:
I was running a windows program under bootcamp which uses some 3d rendering (via DirectX 9) and it suddenly starting running unbearably slow.
Restarting/reinstalling DX, and the app didn't help. I then tried several games/3d apps after this and they *all* get between 1-2fps at 1024x768x16 resolution and bare minimum settings. Even ones that used to run natively on highest settings around 30-40fps. No drivers have been changed, CPU is holding around 20-30% load while running, roughly 1800MB free RAM and no paging. No viruses/malware, nothing has been installed since it was last working.
So my thoughts? Reinstall windows. I was going to do this, and thought to fire up X-Plane on OS X. Normally I get about 25fps with my saved settings, but the game was choppy. Textures look like they are in 256 colors, the sky is like 4-5 blocky shades of blue, poor performance even with low settings. Otherwise everything 2D looks and behaves great on this machine. No screen/display issues, no garbled visuals anywhere. Yet it performs worse than my G4 Mini at anything I've tried 3D.
Is this a sign of problems with the 8600M GT? I can't imagine there only being problems in the 3D side of things, where the 2D is fine. Any ideas? Any diagnostics I can run?
