I edit/export in Prores and Adobe PP/FCPX with footage from an a7r3 Sony. This is not my main career, but I do enough of this plus photography on the side. Now what is the best combo. I already have the Lg Ultrafine 5K, and I need a laptop for sure. But which is the best way to go:
Option 1.
LG Ultrafine 5K (I own this already)
Brand new Mac Pro 2013 D700 512 6 core 16gb for 2400/Brand new Mac Pro 2013 64gb D500 512 6 core for 2k
MBP 15 512gb 560 for 2k USB C SSD
Option 2
LG Ultrafine 5K (I own this already)
MBP 2018 Maxed Out
Option 3
Sell my Ultrafine 5K.
iMac Pro 8 Core for 3600
Macbook Pro 13 Inch 2017 ntb 256 or MBP 2015 Radeon 370x 512gbssd

You might consider the iMac Pro if you're interested in pure performance right now and you can't wait to purchase a new Mac. The 6,1 just doesn't cut it these days, IMO. Your UltraFine would be full resolution on the iMac Pro, where as the 6,1 would have to downsample the image to 3840x2160 (4k). It's on display like that at most Apple stores. Plus the GPU in the 6,1 is 5 years old.

If you're working with 4k footage a lot, I wouldn't consider the current laptop line unless you really need portability. I bought one in the hopes that eGPU would support my needs, however, most NLE's really don't support eGPU in any significant way just yet, especially if you have an UltraFine as it can't connect to a eGPU, aka exactly why I'm trying to sell 2 of them right now and haven't had any bites!
