Is thunderbolt 3 as fast as internal storage?

If I buy a MacBook and get a Thunderbolt 3 external drive with an SSD, is that storage as fast as the internal storage? And are there any Thunderbolt 3 external storage devices out yet?

it's as fast as the SSD (Thunderbolt 2 is as well). how that compares to the internal, depends on what that is.

The MacBook does not have a Thunderbolt 3 port. It has a USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 port, which has the same speed as a USB 3.0 port. It is not nearly as fast as the internal drive, but if you get a speedy SSD it should still be very quick.
